Planning is essential for an online classroom environment. Considerable time and investment is needed to design and develop a quality online course, whether you are creating a new course or transitioning a face-to-face course to a blended/hybrid or fully online course.
Learn about Online Teaching
- Think about how the role of the instructor and the needs of the students are different in online instructional environments compared to traditional classroom instruction
- Explore resources available for online instruction tips and best practices
- Be mindful of the importance of Universal Design for Learning, Accessibility, and Copyright/Fair Use in online course design and delivery
- Use the CSU Quality Learning and Teaching (QLT) evaluation instruments to guide the design and delivery of your online, blended, and flipped courses to assure quality
Plan the Course
- Use the course Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) as the foundation for the course design and development
- Write measurable, student-centered learning objectives/outcomes
- Align instructional and assessment activities and assignments to SLOs
- Create an alignment matrix to ensure instruction and assessment align with SLOs
- Follow CSUF UPS 411.404 Policy for Online Instruction
- Make sure your syllabus contains all the UPS required components and is accessible
Master the Technology
- Become familiar with the learning management system (LMS) – TITANium (Moodle), software available to faculty, and other online tools (see Professional Development section for more details)
- Be sure to have access to adequate workspace and equipment (like a quiet space equipped with a computer, webcam, and a headset) for creating videos and holding online office hours
- Know how/where to get help should the need arise (see Technology Use and Support section for more details)
